BYD making waves as exports surge
BYD is making waves globally as its vehicle exports surge dramatically, underscoring its growing influence in the electric vehicle (EV) market. February 2025 marked an unprecedented milestone for the Chinese automaker, with worldwide vehicle sales totaling 322,846 units—a robust 8.9% increase from January. This sales volume comprises multiple brands under the BYD umbrella: 304,673 BYD-badged cars from its Dynasty and Ocean series, 8,513 Denza vehicles, 4,942 units from Fang Cheng Bao, and 105 Yangwang vehicles.
While year-over-year growth for February stands at a dramatic 165.2%, this comparison is influenced by the shifting dates of the Chinese New Year, a holiday that significantly impacts monthly sales figures in China. A more accurate year-over-year comparison aggregates January and February sales: BYD sold 614,679 vehicles in these two months combined, representing a solid 90% growth from 322,767 vehicles during the same period in the previous year.
The standout achievement, however, remains BYD’s remarkable export performance, with 67,025 vehicles shipped overseas in February alone—an impressive jump of nearly 188% compared to the same month last year. Over January and February combined, BYD exported 133,361 vehicles, reflecting a significant 124% year-over-year increase from 59,465 units in early 2024.
Driving this international expansion are strategic launches like the BYD Atto 2, a compact electric crossover recently introduced in Europe. Built on BYD’s innovative e-Platform 3.0 and featuring the company’s Blade battery technology, the Atto 2 is gaining traction in Europe’s competitive compact SUV segment. Additionally, BYD’s premium brand Denza is set to enter European markets in April, indicating further commitment to international growth.
BYD’s shift toward exclusively producing new energy vehicles—comprising battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)—since April 2022 continues to pay dividends. In 2024, BYD sold 4.25 million passenger vehicles globally, a 41% rise from 2023, with exports accounting for roughly 10% of total sales. Analysts project that BYD’s total vehicle sales could reach approximately 5.5 million units by the end of 2025, further cementing its position as a global EV leader.
